Steve Smith is Australia’s 45th Test captain, and has transformed himself over his international career from leg-spinner to world-class batsman. Smith made his first-class debut in 2008, playing for New South Wales against Western Australia. Two years later he was given his Baggy Green in a Test match against Pakistan, where he batted at no.8 and took three wickets as the front-line spinner in a Test victory for the Aussies. Smith was dropped from the Australian team due to inconsistent form during the 2010-11 Ashes and used this time to regain form and confidence in the domestic competition. In 2013 he was recalled to the Test team, scoring 92 against India in Mohali which earned him a late call-up to Australia’s Ashes touring party.
