Perera after first ODI defeat against Bangladesh

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Perera has given credit to the Bangladesh bowlers after their 33-run defeat against the hosts in the first match of three-match ODI series at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday.

However, Perera also saw the difference of ‘experience’ between the two teams and stated this as one of the main problems alongside the failure of top-order batsmen. Only Wanindu Hasaranga played a big innings of 74 runs off 60 balls.

Before coming to Bangladesh, the biggest shock for the Lankan cricket team was the absence of senior cricketers like Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal etc. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) has sent a youth team to the tour for future planning. In comparison, Bangladesh played with a full strength team.

“Not good to end on the losing side, but there are a lot of positives. Wanindu was superb. We bowled well. Bangladesh are a good side, our bowlers aren’t experienced but they did well to restrict them to 257,” he said.

The biggest hope in Sri Lanka’s inexperienced top order was captain Perera and Kusal Mendis. However, none of them could play a big innings with responsibility. Apart from Hasaranga, the rest of the batsmen could not. As a result, the Sri Lankan captain asked the batsmen to take more responsibility.

“Hasaranga is highly-rated, he backs his strength and to bowl 10 overs in these conditions was a great effort. The top-order batsmen need to bat at least 30-35 overs. Isuru [Udana] and Wanindu gave us a chance, but credit to their bowlers. We have two games and we have to come back strongly,” added Perera.

The second ODI is scheduled to take place on May 25 at the same venue.
