Paine, Starc attain personal milestones

Australia Test captain Tim Paine has set a new wicket-keeping record while his go-to man Mitchell Starc also achieved a landmark at the same time.

On day two of the second Test against India at the MCG, Rishabh Pant’s dismissal in the second session provided two records. Paceman Starc became the ninth Australian to take 250 Test wickets.

Starc took 59 matches and 112 innings to achieve this feat. He is the fifth fastest Australian to 250 wickets.

On the first ball of the 60th over, Pant, on 29, bottom-edged a short delivery from Starc which Paine gleefully accepted behind the stumps to bring down India’s fifth wicket in the first innings.

The catch was Paine’s 150th dismissal as a wicket-keeper in Test matches. In 33 Tests, he surpassed South African’s Quinton de Kock record (34 matches).

Former Australians Adam Gilchrist and Rod Marsh had reached their 150th dismissals in 36 and 39 matches respectively. de Kock’s countryman and current Proteas coach Mark Bouncher had the record in 38 Tests.

Paine (36 years and 19 days) is one of the oldest men to have achieved 150 wicket-keeping dismissals. Australian Wally Grout (37), South Africa’s Dave Richardson (38) and England’s Bob Taylor (41) have had record at an older age.
