Mushfiqur rules out chances of leading Bangladesh

Former Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has denied any possibility of him taking the charge in national team.

Mushfiqur, the Beximco Dhaka captain, spoke to the media ahead of the opening Bangabandhu T20 Cup match between Dhaka and Minister Group Rajshahi. This is the first time he will be playing for a Dhaka team.

The wicket-keeper batsman is excited to be a part of Dhaka, “This is the first time I am with Dhaka. Everybody dreams of playing in a big team like Dhaka. I am very lucky to be in this team.”

Mushfiqur was given the role to lead a young Dhaka side. Although, the 33-year-old feels the role could have been given to someone who has the potential to lead Bangladesh national team in future. He also ruled out chances of captaining Bangladesh in international cricket.

“Captaincy depends on what the franchises want. It would be better for the national team in future if the young players are given the opportunity. They feel I am the right person to guide the team. It’s a challenge to make my team number one. I am ready to take the challenge.”

“I feel there is no chance of me captaining the national team. It would be better if it was given to those who have the possibility (of captaining Bangladesh). They could get the experience from this tournament. I think the responsibilities of a young players will increase if they start taking them. However, this is a franchise-based tournament and they (Beximco Dhaka) wanted me to captain. I will try to give them something back as a person and a captain,” he added.

Mushfiqur was appointed Bangladesh’s all-format captain in 2011. He continued in white-ball cricket till 2014 and Test cricket till 2017. Since then Mushfiqur has repeatedly mentioned he would not take the role again.
