Mominul doubtful for West Indies series

Mominul Haque’s participation in the home series against West Indies next year is under scrutiny as the Bangladesh Test captain has been ruled out of the field for at least four weeks.

Mominul scored his eighth Test hundred

Mominul injured his right thumb during Gazi Group Chattogram’s match against Gemcon Khulna in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup. He was confirmed to be out for the rest of the tournament after an X-ray report showed a fracture on his finger.

With West Indies due to tour Bangladesh in January-February for three Tests, three ODIs and two T20Is, concerning clouds are hovering over Mominul, who has been Bangladesh’s Test captain for just over a year.

“We are discussing about Mominul with a specialist surgeon. After seeing the X-ray report, he told us an surgery will be needed. We will fix the date and also finalise whether the surgery will be taken here (Bangladesh) or abroad. This type of surgery is possible in the country but we will try to do the best,” BCB physio Debashish Chowdhury said.

“It takes four weeks to get onto field after such surgery. It depends on his recovery and rehab process. Now is not the time to comment on whether he will be able to lead in the Test series in January.”

Mominul had earlier contracted COVID-19 last month. He was picked by Chattogram franchise during his isolation period. The Cox’s Bazar-born man joined the practice session after being tested negative for the virus.

Meanwhile, the fixtures for Bangladesh vs West Indies are yet to be released. There is a possibility of two Tests taking place instead of three.
