Jahurul, Mashrafe storm Khulna into finals

Gemcon Khulna have thumped Gazi Group Chattogram by 47 runs in Qualifier 1 at Mirpur to book a place in the Final of Bangabandhu T20 Cup 2020.

Chattogram failed to cope up with the pressure of 211 in road to final, managing only 163 for the loss of all wickets in 19.4 overs.

Liton Das got Chattogram to a quick start despite Soumya Sarkar was dismissed for a golden duck by Mashrafe Bin Mortaza in the first over. Mashrafe then returned to take the big scalp of Liton, who hit 13-ball 24.

Skipper Mohammad Mithun was in short of runs in this tournament. The stage was set and he cashed in with a half-century. Mithun played 35 balls for 53 runs including 3 fours and 3 sixes. Ariful Haque’s part-time medium pace bluffed him.

Chattogram could not get any momentum. The veteran Mashrafe took his maiden T20 five-wicket haul by dismissing Shamsur Rahman and Mustafizur Rahman in the 18th over.

Put into bat, Jahurul Islam attacked Khulna bowlers early on as he paired with Zakir Hasan (16) for 71 runs in the opening stand. The start was instrumental in Khulna setting up a big total of 210/7.

Jahurul fell short of a well-deserved ton, making 80 runs off 51 deliveries with 5 fours and 4 sixes. The rest of the batsmen went all guns blazing in the last ten overs.

Imrul Kayes departed after a 12-ball 25. Skipper Mahmudullah Riyad announced himself with three consecutive sixes off Shoriful Islam. Sanjit Saha sent him back after an entertaining cameo of 30 runs from just 9 balls.

Shakib Al Hasan finally got some form with the bat in his 15-ball 28-run knock that included 2 fours and 2 sixes.

Mustafizur Rahman picked 2 for 31 in 3.4 overs. He was banished from bowling after sending down two beamers in the last over. Mashrafe hit Soumya for a big six on the free hit ball.

The final will be held on December 18. Chattogram will meet Beximco Dhaka in the second qualifier on Tuesday (December 15).
