England recover collapse to take series 2-0

England have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series against Sri Lanka, winning the second T20I by 5 wickets (DLS method) at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.

0-1 behind, Sri Lanka elected to bat first again at the toss. England rested Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes from their playing XI.

Sri Lanka were struck by early blows, losing openers Danushka Gunathilaka (3) and Avishka Fernando (6) cheaply. Kusal Perera (21 off 25) steadied the ship with Kusal Mendis, who top scored with 39 runs from 39 balls.

Once the partnership was broken, England’s disciplined bowling restricted the visitors to 111/7 in 20 overs. Mark Wood and Adil Rashid shared four wickets between them.

Sri Lanka’s reply was strong as they sent back four English batters for 36 runs, setting up an intriguing finish to the match. Sam Billings’ 24 off 29 and Liam Livingstone’s unbeaten 29* off 26 saw England over the line after a rain delay at the start of the 13th over.

The target was reduced to 103 in 18 overs. Sam Curran launched a straight six to finish the game in 16.1 overs.

The third and final T20I will be played at The Hampshire Bowl on June 26.
