Bowling effort puts Khulna back to winning ways

Gemcon Khulna have won their second match in four matches after a dominating 37-run win over Beximco Dhaka in match No.8 of Bangabandhu T20 Cup at Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mirpur. Dhaka succumb their third straight loss.

Dhaka had a poor start to their run chase of 147, having being 15/3 in 5 overs after Shakib Al Hasan’s double maiden in the third and fifth overs, the third being a wicket maiden as Shakib bowled Naim Sheikh for 1. It was Shuvagata Hom who started the top-order collapse, sending back Tanzid Hasan Tamim just after being hit for a boundary in the first over.

The momentum was lost when Shahidul Islam leaked 18 runs in the sixth over just after bowling a good 1-1 in the fourth over.

Yasir Ali and Mushfiqur Rahim revived Dhaka in 57-run partnership although the required rate was creeping higher. Hasan Mahmud’s double strike – Yasir (21 off 29) and Akbar Ali (1), and Shuvagata dismissing Mushfiqur put Khulna back on top. Mushfiqur struck 5 boundaries in his 35-ball 37.

Khulna rattled Dhaka for 109 in 19.2 overs. Shuvagata and Shahidul grabbed three wickets each. Shakib ended up with figures of one wicket for 8 runs in four overs.

It has been the same old story for Khulna’s top-order, losing 3 for 30 in 5.3 overs with Anamul Haque (5), Shakib (11) and Jahurul Islam (4) failing to stick on the pitch. Shakib struck two boundaries before being bowled by a inswinger from Rubel Hossain.

Skipper Mahmudullah Riyad took hold of the situation with Imrul Kayes, putting on a 56-run steady partnership. Imrul made 27-ball 29 while Ariful Haque departed after 19 off 11.

Late blasts, powered by Shuvagata’s 5-ball 15* got Khulna to a respectable total of 146/8. Mahmudullah may have have been sluggish in his 47-ball 45-run knock (3 fours) but it was instrumental in avoiding another low total after a mere 86 in their previous outing against Chattogram.

Rubel was the pick of the bowlers, bagging 3 wickets for 28 runs, while debutant Shafiqul Islam, a left-arm seamer, was impressive for his 2 for 34.

Shuvagata was adjudged player of the match for his cameo with the bat and 3/13 in 3.2 overs with the ball.

Brief scores:

Gemcon Khulna 146/8 in 20 overs (Mahmudullah 45, Imrul 29; Rubel 3/28, Shafiqul 2/34)

Beximco Dhaka 109 allout in 19.2 overs (Mushfiqur 37; Shuvagata 3/13, Shahidul 3/30, Hasan 2/22, Shakib 1/8)
