Bowlers, Shanto steer Rajshahi to second straight win

Minister Group Rajshahi have registered their second win of Bangabandhu T20 Cup 2020. They have beaten a strong Gemcon Khulna side comprehensively by 6 wickets in the third match at Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

Chasing 147, Rajshahi captain Najmul Hossain Shanto gave his side a flying start although he lost his opening partner Anisul Islam Emon in the third over. Rony Talukdar looked good for his 26 off 20 before falling to Rishad Hossain.

Leg-spinner Rishad sent back Najmul in his next over, when the latter brought up his third T20 fifty. Najmul was instrumental as he returned to runs after a lean patch. The left-hander slammed three sixes and six fours on course to 34-ball 55 runs.

Fazle Mahmud Rabbi played a cameo 16-ball 24-run innings to give his team a complete control of the match. Mohammad Ashraful played trademark late-cuts in his 22-ball 25* runs as he stayed till the end to ensure Rajshahi’s victory with 16 balls remaining.

Shakib Al Hasan went wicketless for 27 runs in his four-over spell for Gemcon Khulna.

Khulna put 146/6 on board after a disastrous start to the innings. Opting to bat first, Khulna lost 5 wickets for 51 runs. Imrul Kayes was the first to go as he top-edged Mahedi Hasan for a second consecutive duck. Shakib (12) failed to deliver, falling in short-ball trap off Mukidul Islam Mugdho to deep square leg.

Anamul Haque (26 off 24) had a promising start but he perished, courtesy of a brilliant direct hit from Mahedi’s arm. Skipper Mahmudullah Riyad’s short stay, 7 off 13, ended in a soft dismissal off Arafat Sunny’s bowling.

Last match’s hero Ariful Haque and Shamim Hossain Patwary rebuilt the innings after the collapse. Shamim played a handy knock of 25-ball 35 runs, hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes. Ariful remained till the end, scoring 41* runs from 31 deliveries including 2 fours and 3 sixes.

Rajshahi bowlers made use of the grassy pitch. Ebadat Hossain swung the ball in the early part of the innings. He picked the wicket of Shamim later. Mukidul was expensive for his 2 for 44.
