There is no doubt that Daniel Vettori was a legend in his playing career. However, the former New Zealand captain has not yet been able to fully prove himself as a coach. So, this time he’s going to lose his job as spin bowling coach of Bangladesh national cricket team.
Vettori was appointed as the spin coach of Bangladesh in July 2019. Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) contract with the former New Zealand captain was a little different. Vettori was supposed to work with the national team for 100 days, for which the BCB had to spend 2 crore BDT.
However, after a year and a half of recruitment, the Tigers have not yet received the full service of Vettori. Last year, he didn’t visit Pakistan. He also did not feature in the ongoing home series against the Caribbeans due to COVID-19 complications, so local coach Sohail Islam has to work with the spinners. BCB is therefore forced to look for a new spin coach. In that case, Vettori may be working with the Tigers for the last time in the next series of Bangladesh, i.e. New Zealand series.
BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon told the media on Saturday (January 23rd) that it would be decided in the next 2-3 days who will be Bangladesh’s next spin bowling coach. He said the board was also thinking about what would happen to the rest of the BCB’s 100-day contract.
“We want a coach for a longer time. It would not be possible if you want to coach for a short time. That’s why we’re looking for someone else. I have already got several interested coaches,” BCB president said.
The board wants to hire someone for a long time, keeping in mind the Tigers’ busy schedule. A list of potential coaches is already being discussed.
