Aakash Chopra names his ODI XI of the decade

Cricket is not the same as before. The game has totally evolved in terms of the passage of play. The cricketers whom we address them as ‘stars’ were termed as below average players during the initial stages of their cricketing career. However, a transformation in cricketer’s life is evident. Players who took the sport seriously have worked on their gameplay and touched the pinnacle of success.

Meanwhile, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra who has been in limelight more often than not for his interesting analysis on the game has now picked his ODI XI of the decade. Rohit Sharma and Hashim Amla are picked as openers. Rohit started his career in the middle-order when the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag used to open the batting.

Hitman hardly got a chance to bat. However, his career suddenly took a U-turn when he was promoted as an opener in 2013. There was no looking back since then. He etched his name into the record books for scoring 3 double centuries in ODIs. He is the only batsman to score 150+ for the 8th time. He is also the only batsman to register the highest individual score of 264 in ODI cricket. He achieved this feat against Sri Lanka. Rohit ended up as highest run-scorer in ICC World Cup 2019 – 648 runs.

Hashim Amla who retired from international cricket last year has been a loyal servant to South Africa in ODIs. He was a consistent player for the team who often helps Proteas steer into the comfort zone by scoring big knocks.

He explained why he picked Amla as an opener. “I was thinking if the other opener could be David Warner. He has also scored a lot of runs but I am going with Hashim Amla. He is a huge favourite of mine, he is a little under-rated but his numbers for the decade have been phenomenal,” Chopra said in a video shared on his Facebook page.

Coming in at No.3, Indian captain Virat Kohli earned his spot. He is arguably the best batsman across formats in the present era. Just like Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers was one of the important pillars of South African cricket history. He scored fastest ODI century in just 31 balls against West Indies.

He earned his place in Chopra’s ODI XI. Chopra named MS Dhoni as captain and wicket-keeper of his XI. Dhoni needs no introduction as the amount of success he achieved in his career is beyond words. Dhoni is the only captain to win 3 ICC trophies and the only wicket-keeper with most stumping dismissals (123) in ODIs.

Shakib-Al-Hasan has been an inspiration to the Bangladesh cricket team. The world-class all-rounder has been supporting his team even in lean patches. He scored 606 runs in the 2019 ODI World Cup and also picked up 11 wickets. Mohammad Hafeez has been helping the Pakistani cricket team for more than a decade. His contribution to the team as an all-rounder has never been in doubt.

Chopra picked three fast bowlers namely Malinga, Starc and Bumrah. These three are the deadly pacers for their respective teams. Starc ended up as highest wicket-taker in the 2019 World Cup – 27 wickets. At last, Chopra picked a solitary spinner who is Imran Tahir.

Aakash Chopra’s ODI XI of the decade:

Rohit Sharma, Hashim Amla, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, MS Dhoni (C & WK), Shakib Al Hasan, Mohammad Hafeez, Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Starc, Jasprit Bumrah, Imran Tahir.
